As WIC support staff, you are often the first people a mom interacts with at WIC. You have the important role in ensuring the first thing a mom sees and hears at WIC is supportive of breastfeeding.
Why Breastfeeding Fact 1:
Breast milk is the optimal first food for human babies.
Why Breastfeeding Fact 2:
Even one feeding of breast milk in the hospital decreases the infant’s risk of SIDS in the first year of life.
Why Breastfeeding Fact 3:
If moms hear positive messages about breastfeeding at every stage of their pregnancy, they are more likely chose breastfeeding.
Why breastfeeding
The health benefits of breastfeeding for mother and baby are clear. Breastfeeding is no longer a lifestyle choice, but a public health decision.
Breastfeeding protects against SIDS and SUIDS.
Breastfeeding protects against postpartum depressions.
Breastfeeding protects infants against ear infections.
High Impact Behaviors
A high impact behavior is an action that is EFFECTIVE and EFFICIENT. As WIC support staff, you have the ability to accomplish it. It is an action that you can do today. Let’s get started!
Affirm
Affirm breastfeeding by telling mothers, “We encourage breastfeeding,” and, “We recommend breastfeeding here!” Your endorsement goes a long way.
Normalize
Normalize breastfeeding by encouraging breastfeeding in all areas, such as the waiting room and WIC clinic rooms.
Build
Build the team by including mom’s champion in all of your interactions and sharing a consistent message about breastfeeding.
